Finca Luna

The Project

“Finca Luna” is a project of Gaia Tasiri Association. Finca means farm, and Luna means moon. It emerged from the permacultural action learning experience that began in 2006 in Las Tricias, island of La Palma.

Finca Luna is our experimental and educational farm on syntropic agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, and permaculture. Here, we put into practice what we learn, experiment, share our knowledge, and train our volunteers.

The expected results of our work in Finca Luna are to:

  • Increase the soil humus layer by 1 cm per year
  • Reduce irrigation while maintaining production
  • Achieve self-sufficiency in organic matter and fertilizer
  • Increase the quantity and diversity of plant species per m²
  • Increase the farm’s plant biomass
  • Increase the soil fungus/bacteria ratio (an indicator of carbon sequestration)
  • Increase production and food self-sufficiency

About the farm

We are in the north of La Palma, an island declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. It is the greenest of the Canary Islands, known as “the beautiful island” for its natural beauty and varied ecosystems. It is also one of the smallest, with 80 thousand inhabitants.

Finca Luna is located near a rural town of 200 inhabitants and a 45-minute walk from a larger town with businesses of all kinds and a weekend market.

The climate is very different from what we can imagine in the Canary Islands. At our altitude, winter is wet and cold (between 5 and 15 degrees) and summer is hot and dry (up to 40 degrees).

The farm is 6000m2 and is populated mainly by almond, figue, orange and pear trees. Although we also produce avocado, apple, plums, olives, loquats and pomegranate to name a few. Our rainfall pattern is around 500mm per year (from 200 to 800 depending on the year) with a dry season of around 6 months.
